Completed in 1888, the Texas Capitol at Austin is built in the Renaissance Revival style of “sunset red” granite (quarried only 50 miles away) on a limestone foundation with additional structural support by masonry walls and cast iron columns and beams. It boasts the largest square footage of all the state capitols and ranks second in total size after the National Capitol in Washington, D.C. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1986. Extensions or restorations were completed in 1993, 1995, and 1997.
